Welsh rugby chief Roger Lewis to run Cardiff Airport
Welsh rugby chief Roger Lewis is to be the new chairman of Cardiff Airport.
Welcome back to the Roger Lewis blog. A leading figure in Wales and Welsh sport and business, Roger Lewis looks back on his appointment as Chairman of Cardiff Airport. He is leaving his post as Welsh Rugby Union group chief executive in October after the World Cup and will replace Lord Rowe-Beddoe.
Transport Minister Edwina Hart said he was "the right person to steer our future ambitions" at the airport, which the Welsh government bought in 2013.
Mr Lewis said he was "thrilled" to be offered the job, saying the airport was "crucial" to the economy of Wales.
He has been at the helm of Welsh rugby since 2006, following a 30-year career in the music and media industries.
After a hugely successful four years, Roger Lewis had announced his plan to step down as Chairman of Cardiff Airport on 31 October 2019 after his tenure came to an end.
In preparation earlier this year, the Airport undertook an open, competitive recruitment process to secure a successor. The details are being finalised; the preferred candidate has been identified and is planned to be in post from June 2020.
In light of these circumstances Mr Lewis has kindly agreed to remain in post until 31 May 2020 in order to maintain consistency during the interim period.
Ken Skates AC/AM, Minister for Economy and Transport said, “On behalf the Welsh Government I would like to record my gratitude for the great work Roger has done so far with the Airport, and will now continue to do until June.
“I have no doubt that Roger will continue to bring his focus and leadership to this important role.”
Deb Bowen Rees, CEO of Cardiff Airport, commented: “Roger has played a vital role in providing strategic leadership and has imparted a wealth of knowledge that has empowered us, as a Board of Directors, to drive the Airport business forward and deliver some huge successes.
“On behalf of the entire team, I would like to thank Roger for agreeing to continue leading the Airport team into 2020.”
Roger Lewis, Chairman of Cardiff Airport, added: “It has been an honour to be a part of such a dynamic team who have continuously delivered not just for Cardiff Airport, but for Wales.
“Our national Airport is in great shape and, whilst we acknowledge there is more work to be done, our journey ahead looks bright. I look forward to continuing to work alongside the Airport team who continue to show their dedication to the people of Wales.”
Mr Lewis has also started a new Welsh Government role as President of Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales, a family of seven museums located throughout Wales.
